Texting and SMS
How to forward text messages to another number, phone or inbox
Reviewed by Sujan ThapaliyaLast updated
The short answer
The reason this is confusing is that people reasonably expect forwarding to move everything, and it does not. Calls and texts are separate services that happen to share a number, and the forwarding rule you set applies to one of them.
Why does call forwarding leave texts behind?
A call is a live connection the network sets up between two points, so redirecting it is a routing decision made at the moment it arrives. A text is a store-and-forward message delivered to the subscriber record attached to the number. There is no equivalent redirect step for the network to apply, which is why the star codes that move your calls do nothing to your messages.
The consequence surfaces immediately whenever somebody hands a line over: the colleague answers the calls, the original handset keeps collecting the texts, and nobody notices until a customer asks why their message went unanswered.
What are the four ways to actually move messages?
| Method | How it works | Honest limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Sync across your own devices | Messages appear on your tablet or laptop as well as your phone | Same account only — it cannot send messages to somebody else |
| Forwarding app (Android) | An app watches incoming messages and re-sends them | Full read access to every message on the phone; the forwarded copy comes from the app's number, not the sender's |
| Carrier SMS forwarding | A line feature where the carrier offers one | Not universally available, and rarely on consumer plans |
| Business messaging platform | The number lives on the platform; messages arrive in a shared inbox | Requires moving or provisioning the number, which is the point |
How do you forward one message by hand?
- 1
Open the conversation
Find the message itself rather than the thread — forwarding works per message on both platforms. - 2
Long-press it
On Android, long-press and choose Forward. On iPhone, long-press, choose More, tick the message, then use the forward arrow. - 3
Pick the recipient and check what carries over
The text carries; the original sender's number does not. The recipient sees the message coming from you, so add who it was from if that matters.
Forwarding apps see everything
What should a business do instead?
Every method above except the last is a workaround for the same underlying problem: the number belongs to a handset rather than to the business. Once customer messages arrive on a number the company controls, forwarding stops being a question — messages land in an inbox several people can see, get assigned, and stay when somebody leaves.
It also puts the compliance side on a footing that survives scrutiny. Consent, opt-out handling and message retention are properties of the platform rather than of whoever happens to hold the phone, and the rules that govern calling a number govern texting it — see the TCPA guide.
