Preview dialer: see the record before the call connects

Reviewed by Sujan ThapaliyaLast updated

What is a preview dialer?

A preview dialer shows the agent the full contact record before placing the call and lets them decide when to dial. It is the slowest automated mode and the right one whenever opening the call with the wrong context would cost more than the extra minute of preparation.
Why preview dialer works better on numbers you own: on a shared pool your calls are a small fraction of the traffic from the same block, so the caller-ID reputation is mostly other businesses' calling and signing caps at B attestation. On owned numbers the reputation is your own, callbacks reach your team, and calls sign at A attestation with CNAM registered.
Preview dialer runs on numbers you own outright, which is what the diagram's right-hand column describes.

How it works

Preview dialer in four steps

No implementation project. Most teams are dialling the same day they sign up.

  1. 1

    The record appears first

Full history, previous outcomes, notes, and any account context, all before the number is dialed, not while it rings.
  2. 2

    The agent decides

Call now, skip with a reason, or schedule for later. Skips are logged so a list is not quietly cherry-picked.
  3. 3

The call places on their signal

One key, and the call is dialed from the right caller ID for that contact's market.
  4. 4

    Wrap-up writes back

Disposition, notes, and next action recorded against the record the agent was already looking at.

Capabilities

What you get

Full context before dialing

Prior calls, prior outcomes, account value, and notes on one screen, so the first sentence can reference something real.

Agent-controlled pacing

No automatic next call. The agent finishes their note, takes a breath, and starts the next one when ready.

Skip with a reason

Skipping is allowed and recorded, which is how you find out that a list segment is unworkable rather than just under-called.

No abandoned calls, ever

One call, one agent, already present. There is no pacing model and no abandonment rate to manage.

Full recording and transcript

Every call captured and searchable, which matters most on exactly the conversations preview dialing is used for.

When preview dialing is worth being slower

Preview dialing is the only mode that deliberately spends time before the call. That trade is right when knowing something changes what you say, and wrong when it does not — which is a question about your list, not about your reps.

  • Named accounts and renewals — the last conversation, the open ticket and the contract date all change the opening line.
  • High contract values — a minute of preparation against a five-figure deal is not a cost worth optimising.
  • Complex or regulated products — where the wrong opening is a compliance problem rather than a missed opportunity.
  • Callbacks and inbound follow-ups — the person asked you to call; arriving without the context is worse than not calling.
  • Not for cold volume — if there is nothing in the record to read, the preview screen is a pause with no information in it.

The skip is the feature

Every automatic mode dials whatever is next. Preview lets the rep decline: a record that is stale, a contact who was called yesterday, a number that belongs to somebody who has left. Those skips are the difference between a list that improves as it is worked and one that degrades.

It is worth measuring the skip rate rather than suppressing it. A rising skip rate is data quality telling you something, and teams that push reps to stop skipping simply move the damage into the conversations.

Fit

Who a preview dialer is right for

If none of these describe you, a different mode probably fits better; the comparison pages lay out the trade-offs honestly.

  • Enterprise and named-account outreach where context is the whole call
  • Collections and any conversation with a sensitive history
  • Regulated selling where the opening disclosure must be right
  • Small, high-value lists where one bad call cannot be replaced

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a preview dialer and a progressive dialer?
A preview dialer waits for the agent to decide when to dial. A progressive dialer shows the record and then dials automatically after a short pause. Preview gives the agent control; progressive gives you throughput at the cost of it.
Is preview dialing worth it if throughput is low?
It is not bought for throughput. It is bought because a badly opened call on a high-value account costs more than the extra minute, and because every outcome is still logged automatically, which manual dialing does not do.
Can I mix preview and power dialing?
Yes, and most teams should. Preview the named accounts, power-dial the follow-up list. They are modes on the same platform, not separate products.
