Auto dialers explained: power, parallel, predictive, and preview

The short answer
Every dialer vendor claims a multiple: three times more conversations, five times more connects. The multiples are not made up, but they measure different things and they apply to different situations. Understanding which mode produces which multiple, and at what cost, takes about ten minutes and saves a lot of money.
The four modes

Preview dialing
The record appears, the rep reads it, and dials when ready. Throughput is barely above manual, which is the point: it is for conversations where opening with the wrong context loses the relationship. Collections with a sensitive history, enterprise accounts, anything where the rep needs thirty seconds to prepare.
Power dialing
One call per rep, placed automatically the moment the previous one ends. The gain (typically two to three times manual) comes entirely from removing dead time: looking up the number, typing it, listening to ringtone, writing notes afterwards.
Crucially, because exactly one call is live per rep, a live answer always has someone waiting. A power dialer structurally cannot abandon a call, which takes the entire FCC abandonment regime off your plate.
Parallel dialing
Several lines dialed simultaneously for one named rep. The first line a human answers is bridged; the rest are dropped. On a cold list this is transformative, and the arithmetic is worth doing explicitly.
At a 6% answer rate, one-at-a-time dialing produces a conversation roughly every seventeen attempts. Dial four lines at once and you produce one roughly every four cycles. The rep's hour goes from mostly ringtone to mostly talking, which is also why parallel dialing only makes sense when the answer rate is low. On a warm list with a 40% answer rate, four lines produce multiple simultaneous humans and you are dropping calls on people who picked up.
Connect latency is the whole game
Predictive dialing
The system dials ahead of the whole agent pool, using live answer rates, talk times, and wrap-up times to forecast when someone will next be free. It is the highest-throughput mode and the most tightly regulated.
It needs roughly eight to ten agents on the same campaign before the model has enough data to predict well. Below that you get either idle agents or abandoned calls, which is why small teams that buy predictive dialing usually end up running it in power mode anyway.
The pieces that actually determine performance
Mode choice matters less than four supporting mechanisms that vendors rarely lead with.
Answering machine detection
Deciding, in the first second or two, whether a human or a voicemail greeting answered. Too aggressive and it hangs up on real people, which counts as an abandoned call. Too slow and a live prospect hears silence, which is the most common reason auto-dialed calls die. See answering machine detection for how the classification works.
Number reputation controls
Volume concentrated on one number is the fastest route to a “Spam Likely” label, and a labelled number destroys answer rate, which destroys the throughput the dialer was bought for. Per-number daily caps, owned numbers, and automatic quarantine are dialer features, not optional extras. See number reputation management.
Disposition-driven follow-up
A dialer that only dials is half a product. The outcome of each call should trigger the next action automatically (a retry schedule, a task, a text, a suppression entry) because the follow-up is where most pipeline is actually lost.
Compliance enforcement
Calling windows in the contact's time zone, DNC scrubbing before dialing, consent gating, and a hard abandonment ceiling. These belong in the system. A rule that depends on a rep remembering will fail at volume, and each failure is independently actionable under the TCPA.
What an auto dialer costs
Two pricing models dominate, and they suit very different teams.

The honest comparison is one number: total monthly cost divided by conversations had. Run it against your own volume rather than against a pricing page. Per-seat wins when every seat dials all day, every day. Usage wins for almost everyone else, and the gap widens as the team gets more uneven. Our own pricing is usage-based for exactly that reason.
Choosing, in three questions

What is your list's answer rate?
Under about 15%, parallel dialing pays for itself in the first week. Above 25%, it will mostly drop calls on people who answered, and power dialing is the better tool. - 2
How many agents work one campaign simultaneously?
Fewer than eight, predictive dialing cannot model accurately. More than fifteen on a single high-volume campaign and predictive starts to beat parallel on total throughput. - 3
What does one lost conversation cost you?
If the answer is significant (enterprise deals, regulated selling, a small list of named accounts) take the mode that cannot abandon. Throughput is worth nothing if it burns the contacts you cannot replace.
Most teams should not pick one. Parallel-dial the cold prospecting block in the morning, power-dial the warm callbacks in the afternoon. They are modes, not products, and any platform that charges you separately for each is selling you the same engine twice.
What the throughput multiples leave out
Vendor arithmetic tends to compare a dialer against the worst possible manual baseline, then present the result as if nothing else changes. Three things do change, and they eat into the multiple.
- Rep fatigue is real. Six hours of continuous connected conversations is not the same job as six hours punctuated by dialling and note-taking. Teams that go from manual to parallel dialing overnight typically see quality drop before it recovers, and the fix is scheduled breaks rather than a lower line count.
- List depth becomes the constraint. Triple your throughput and you exhaust a list in a third of the time. A dialer that burns a month's list in ten days has moved the bottleneck to sourcing, not removed it.
- Number capacity has to scale with volume. Tripling dials from the same one or two numbers is how a productivity gain turns into a deliverability collapse within a fortnight.
None of these argue against dialing automation. They argue for planning the list supply and the number pool at the same time as the dialer, rather than discovering both a month later.
Inbound and blended operation
Most teams that dial out also take calls in, and the two interact more than the feature lists suggest. A rep on an outbound campaign who is also in an inbound queue is not available for either at full capacity, and a pacing engine that does not know about the inbound load will over-dial exactly when the queue is busiest.
Blended operation handles this properly: inbound takes priority, agents are returned to the outbound pool between calls, and pacing accounts for inbound occupancy in real time. Without it, you get the worst of both: abandoned outbound calls during the inbound peak, and idle reps when it passes.
It also changes the callback story. Outbound campaigns generate returned calls, and a returned call is the highest-intent event the campaign produces. Routing those into the same queue, with the campaign context attached, is often worth more than another few percent of dial throughput.
