magicJack vs Vonage: cheapest line or real phone service?

Reviewed by Sujan ThapaliyaLast updated

The short answer

magicJack is the cheapest way to keep a working phone number, on an annual subscription with a plugged-in device. Vonage costs meaningfully more each month and behaves like a phone service — features, support, business plans and international calling. The gap is not call quality so much as what happens when you need something beyond dial tone.
Flat per-seat licensing plotted against metered usage over connected minutes: the licence is $750 a month regardless of use, metered calling starts at zero and rises at $0.020 a minute, and the two only meet at 37,500 connected minutes. Where your team sits on this chart decides most comparisons of this kind.
Most comparisons in this area resolve to volume rather than features.

Which to choose

Which one should you use?

magicJack when the number just has to exist

A spare line, a legacy number, low usage. Nothing else in the market is meaningfully cheaper, and for a phone that rings occasionally the missing features cost nothing.

Vonage when the phone is part of how you operate

Support you can reach, international calling that is properly priced, and a path to business plans. The monthly difference buys the things you only notice when something goes wrong.

Neither for outbound sales

One is a home adapter and the other is a UC plan with the dialler in a different product. Neither offers branded caller ID, attestation or per-number reputation, which is what decides whether an outbound call is answered at all.

Frequently asked questions

Is magicJack's call quality actually worse?
Not inherently — both are VoIP over your own internet connection, and quality mostly tracks that connection. What differs is what happens when quality is bad: Vonage has support and configuration to work through it, and magicJack largely does not.
Can I port a number between them?
Yes, in either direction, usually for a fee. Start the port while the old service is still active. Cancelling first releases the number and it is normally unrecoverable.
