What is Phone extension?

Definition

A phone extension is a short internal number that reaches one handset or person behind a shared main number. Callers dial the main number, then the extension — either at a prompt or appended to the number with a pause.
The three STIR/SHAKEN attestation levels, which underpin how phone extension behaves in practice: A asserts both that the carrier knows the customer and that the customer may use the calling number, B asserts the customer only, and C asserts neither. A shared number pool can reach B at best, which is why number ownership keeps recurring in these definitions.

How phone extension actually works

On a form asking for a phone extension, the answer is the internal number a switchboard needs to reach your desk, and the field can be left blank if your number is direct.

Dialing an extension automatically requires a pause after the main number: a comma in most mobile dialers inserts a short wait, and multiple commas wait longer. Without it the digits arrive before the system is listening.

Direct inward dialing removes the need for extensions entirely by giving each person a full external number that rings their handset — which is why extensions are gradually disappearing from businesses that have moved to a modern platform.
