Parallel dialer vs power dialer: what you gain, and what it costs

The short answer
Both machines exist to stop an agent waiting. They disagree about what the agent is waiting for, and that disagreement is the whole comparison.
A power dialer removes the seconds between calls: no looking up the next record, no keying digits, no deciding who is next. A parallel dialer removes something much larger — the ringing itself — by placing several calls at once and connecting the agent to whichever one a person answers. The first saves seconds. The second saves minutes, and charges for them in a currency the comparison pages rarely name.

How much more does a parallel dialer actually produce?
Take one agent, a 5% connect rate, a 150-second conversation and a 35-second cycle for a call nobody answers — dial, twenty seconds of ringing, disposition. Everything below follows from those four numbers.

Two lines buys 73% more conversations for an abandonment rate that stays legal. That is an unusually good trade and it is the reason parallel dialing exists.
The third line buys 32% more on top — and takes the abandonment rate past the point where the safe harbour protects you. The fourth buys 19% more and nearly doubles the breach. The returns are shrinking while the exposure grows, which is the opposite of how the pricing tiers are usually arranged.
Going from one line to two is worth 3.2 extra conversations an hour. Going from three to four is worth 1.9, and by then every one of them is being bought outside the safe harbour.
The cost nobody quotes: how fast the list burns
A parallel dialer does not find more people. It reaches the same 5% faster, by consuming records faster. That matters enormously if your list is finite, which it always is.

If your team can source ten thousand qualified records a month, four-line parallel dialing does not give you 2.7× the conversations. It gives you 2.7× the conversations for five days and then an idle agent, which is worse than a power dialer running all month. The line count has to be matched to list supply, not to the size of the plan you bought.
Burning a list is not free, even when it works
The failure a power dialer cannot have
There is a whole component a power dialer does not need, and leaving it out removes an entire class of error. Because the agent is already on the line when the call is answered, a power dialer never has to guess whether a voice is a person. A parallel dialer has to decide that, in under two seconds, on every line in the batch.
Answering machine detection fails in both directions and they cost differently. Classifying a machine as a person costs the agent about twelve seconds of a voicemail greeting. Classifying a person as a machine hangs up on someone who said hello — a lost conversation, and from the prospect's side, a silent call from a number they will remember.

Read that against the throughput table: a parallel dialer on four lines produces 11.9 conversations an hour, but a poor classifier quietly removes up to 1.02 of them before the agent knows they existed. The advertised gain over a power dialer is 7.5 conversations; nearly a seventh of it can disappear into a component the comparison charts do not list.

The honest decision rule has three inputs, and the line count falls out of them rather than being chosen.

Measure the connect rate of the actual list
Not the account average. The safe line count is set by your best-performing list, because that is the one that generates collisions. Two lines abandon exactly half the connect rate, so above 6% there is no compliant line count above one for a single agent. - 2
Check list supply against burn rate
Divide the records you can add per month by the burn rates above. If a line count runs the list dry before the month ends, it is the wrong line count regardless of what it does to the hourly figure. - 3
Choose the mode the answer implies
High connect rate, scarce list, or regulated vertical: power dialer. Low connect rate, deep list, agents pooled so surplus answers have somewhere to go: parallel, at two lines, measured.
One thing that changes the arithmetic entirely is pooling. Everything above assumes one agent per batch, which is the configuration where a second simultaneous answer has nowhere to go. With a shared queue, the surplus answer is bridged to another free agent and costs nothing — at which point you are running a predictive dialer and the constraint becomes pacing across the team rather than lines per seat.
